Residency & Work Permits
Staying long enough to run what you have set up.
A company in Indonesia does not give you the right to live there. Residence and the right to work are separate permissions with their own requirements, and they are the part people leave until the structure is already built.
Which permit fits depends on what you are doing: directing an investment you own, being employed by an Indonesian company, retiring, or holding a longer-term permit on the strength of an investment. Each carries conditions that continue after it is granted.
AFS advise and file in Indonesia. We handle the New Zealand side, including the source-of-funds evidence, which is usually the part that holds an application up.
Scope
We can assist with the following, and more.
Permits
- Investor permits for a shareholder or director of a foreign-owned company
- Work permits for foreign employees, and the sponsoring company’s obligations
- Longer-term permits granted on the strength of an investment
- Retirement and family-based permits
Evidence
- Source and lawful origin of the funds invested
- Company documents supporting the applicant’s role
- Qualifications, where the position requires them
- Documents issued in New Zealand, and getting them accepted there
Dependants
- Spouse and children
- The right to work, where it exists
- Schooling, and the practicalities around it
Afterwards
- Reporting obligations while the permit is held
- Renewal, and the lead time it needs
- What causes a permit to lapse or be revoked
- Leaving properly, and the exit formalities
What we do not promise
We prepare and file. The Indonesian authorities decide.
No adviser in Auckland or Jakarta can promise you an Indonesian permit. The decision belongs to the Indonesian authorities, and anyone telling you the outcome in advance is selling you something.
What can be controlled is the quality of what goes in: the right permit for what you are actually doing, evidence assembled in the order it will be read, and a structure that supports the application rather than contradicting it.
That is most of the difference between a straightforward grant and a request for further information six weeks later.
Questions
Frequently asked questions.
Does owning a company get me residence?
Not automatically. A shareholding or directorship can support an investor permit, but the permit is applied for on its own terms.
Is there an investment route to a longer-term permit?
Yes, with thresholds set by regulation. The figures change, so take the current ones from us in writing.
Can I work on a business visa?
No. Working without the right permit exposes both you and the company sponsoring you, and it is enforced.
How long does it take?
It varies by permit and by how complete the file is. Incomplete source-of-funds evidence is the most common cause of delay we see.
Can my family come?
Generally, as dependants. Whether a spouse may work depends on the permit, and it is worth confirming before anyone resigns a job.
Can you guarantee it?
No, and nor can anyone else. We prepare and file; the Indonesian authorities decide.
